Kind and Taylor Victorious at 2011 Riverwoods Junior Open
Breda, Netherlands (July 16, 2011) During the final round of the 2011 Riverwoods Junior Open players were tested with another day of harsh conditions. Rain and wind played a huge factor during the final round and this was proven by some movement and excitement on the Boys leader board. Headed in to the final round it was looking like it could be two English players standing at the top of the podium as both Lauren Taylor and Paul Lockwood were leading their divisions through 54 holes.
In the girls division Lauren Taylor was able to complete the wire to wire win shooting a solid final round 74 (+2) making her tournament total 289 (+1). Taylor is now able to add another impressive and prestigious win to her resume and there is bound to be many more to follow. Behind Taylor was Latvia native Krista Puisite shooting a final round score of 72 (E) which made her four day total tally to 292 (+4). Rounding out the top three in the Girls division was Ariane Provot of France shooting 71 (-1) on the final day giving her a tournament total of 296 (+8). Shannon Lee Greenshields of Pincourt, QC was unable to make the cut, "I needed to go out there and shoot a good score yesterday in order to make the cut but unfortunately could not get it done on the greens. Either way I am better for the experience and learned a lot about international tournament play this week" admitted Greenshields.
In the Boys division Paul Lockwood was not able to hang on to his lead on the final day shooting a 75 (+3) opening the door for Thomas Pieters of Belgium and Robin Kind of the Netherlands. In the end it was Kind draining a 30 foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole in front of hundreds of spectators to be crowned Boys champion. Both boys finished the tournament with an impressive score of 286 (-2). Kind was in a similar position just two years ago where he was in contention to be boy's champion. With one wayward tee shot on the 18th tee he took himself out of contention. Today that was not the case as Kind was able to hit three perfect tee shots on number 18 (once during the stipulated round and twice during the playoff). There was a tie for third spot in this division between 2010 champion Francesco Laporta of Italy and Rowin Caron of the Netherlands. Paul Lockwood of England finished alone in 5th spot. CJGA Team Canada members Ian Mmbando, Javier Diaz, Conor MacDonald, and Chris MacDonald all put in a valiant effort but could not make the cut. "It's too bad that none of us made the cut but it was a great learning experience for all" exclaimed Javier Diaz of Woodbridge, ON.
This year's Riverwoods Junior Open endured a diverse plethora of weather from rain and wind to sunshine and blue skies. Despite all of those challenges the tournament was a great success with an impressive field of junior golfers who provided an exciting finish on a great finishing hole making the Riverwoods Junior Open remain as one of the most prestigious junior golf events in Europe.
